The National Emergency Operations Centre is Switzerland’s center of expertise for exceptional events in the country. For them, Netcetera developed a message center at the heart of their new “Operations Inbox”, managing all arriving messages and helping to easily triage them for further actions. The system substantially helps to quickly assign, categorize and comment all incoming messages about exceptional events. Documenting all processing steps, the exact way of a message is always replicable. Netcetera developed two successful IT professionals again. David Elsener and Roger Knecht completed their apprenticeship with excellent grades. On 7 July, the apprentices were honored in the congress center Spirgarten in Zürich. The two software developers stay with Netcetera part time and start their technical college in autumn. Bike to Work

32 Netcetera employees whipped their bicycles into shape and joined the Swiss Bike to Work campaign. In June, they rode their bikes to work for health and the environment. All in all the staff covered phenomenal 3217 kilometers, about the distance from Zürich to Skopje and back again. The bike virus has Netcetera firmly in its grip: some employees now regularly ride the bike to work.

Since 13 December 2009, the Swiss Railway is running according to schedule 2010. The timetable was planned with software by Netcetera. With it, SBB plans all journeys of freight and passenger trains. The internationally awarded Swiss software passed the first endurance test well on the day of the timetable change: A derailment at Zürich's main station necessitated the re-scheduling of more than 1,000 trains. Winners of the Robot Team Challenge visiting the German Aerospace Center

The winners of the “Robot Team Challenge” redeemed their prize and visited the German Aerospace Center. The robotics laboratory was the day’s highlight for the students from Sargans, Switzerland. They controlled robot arms and were visibly impressed by the machines’ abilities. In 2008 the students experienced hands-on the difficulties of programming a robot, when Netcetera and AdNovum organized the Robot Team Challenge. This robotic contest during Switzerland's year of IT aimed at bringing Swiss grammar school students closer to informatics. Successful International Java Technology Conference

About 850 participants and over 90 speakers from 37 countries attended the Java technology conference Jazoon’08 in Zürich from 23 to 26 June 2008. IT and Java people were exchanging knowledge and opinions with well-known experts and outstanding speakers in an ideal atmosphere. As co-initiator and technology partner, Netcetera is looking forward to contributing to the attractive conference program again in 2009, and to serve the best coffee in town at its popular networking bar "A Taste of Java".

Winners of the Programming Contest in Mazedonia Appointed

The programming contest Code Fu, initiated by Netcetera in Macedonia, has ended. Pance Cavkovski won with his solution to five algorithmic problems that passed the most unit tests. Nikola Postolov and Ivan Milanov occupy the second and third place. All of them attend the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the University in Skopje. Between 13 April and 8 June 2008, the 500 participants had to overcome four rounds; the warm-up round was followed by two online rounds and ultimately, the remaining 32 participants competed in the finale. The jury evaluated the presented programs by the number of unit test they passed. The three happy winners are now looking forward to a trip to the Java Conference in Zürich, Jazoon.

Six Netcetera speakers are coming up with exciting technical sessions and talks at Jazoon: Stefan Rufer is presenting how a continuous database build reduces dependency. Patrik Auf der Mauer and Jürg Straub are delivering insights into Swiss Railway’s track management system and into managing such a huge project. Stefan Tramm, our unix/shell enthusiast is showing the advantages of Unix command line tools for Java development. In two additional technical short talks Jason Brazile / Stefan Tramm are demonstrating Sun’s dynamic tracing tool Dtrace, while Nicolas Schmidt is presenting the integration of Google Map’s API into a web portal.

The mission of the Swiss Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP) is the promotion of the Eclipse RCP framework for custom applications. «Robot Team Challenge» Generates Surprising Projects

The Zurich-based software companies Netcetera and AdNovum invited interdisciplinary grammar school teams to hand in their projects for the «Robot Team Challenge». This challenge was launched in context of the year of information technologies in Switzerland – informatica08. The initiators of the challenge expected a maximum of 15 applications that would fulfill the quality requirements for soft and hard skills as well as originality. However, after the application deadline at the end of April, twice as many projects were presented and all of them were accepted. The school teams located all over Switzerland, for example in Basel, Bern, Zurich, central Switzerland and Grisons, are receiving an introduction by the software engineers from both companies in the course of the next few days. The projects are being developed over the next five months and awarded in Zurich on 11 September 2008.

With the integrated and forward-looking information platform the building directorate of the Canton of Zürich fulfills the legislation set up by the Swiss Federation. The solution enables the public's insight inside the register of contaminated sites. The software engineering company Netcetera implemented this project in co-operation with Geocom Informatik, specialized in geoinformatics.
